Abstract
Community strategies are outlined that involve civic, youth, voluntary, industry, organizational, media, and criminal justice segments of the community. These include local task forces, hearings, coalitions, networking, public education campaigns, and legislative and treatment approaches. Youth strategies may include model school policies, positive peer and peer resistance programs, school news articles, student assistance programs, and youth conferences. Parent and family strategies for action include parent support and action groups, parent drug and alcohol education programs, and family life skills development. Alcohol and drug policies, employee assistance programs, and drug and alcohol education campaigns are among effective workplace strategies. A number of server education strategies focus on teaching skills such as recognizing intoxication, dealing with intoxicated patrons, responsible hosting, and preventing impaired individuals from driving. Such strategies are suitable for food and beverage industry personnel, as well as private hosts. The mass media provides an effective means for public education. Additional materials provide risk-reduction guidelines for hosts and hostesses and guests, facts on hangovers and alcohol-impaired driving, and listings of publications and programs concerned with alcoholism.
