Following information on the cause, transmission, detection, symptoms, and prevention of acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), this document provides policy guidelines for the management of Chesapeake City Jail, Virginia inmates with AIDS and AIDS related complex (ARC).
Abstract
Guidelines cover infection control and decontamination procedures to be taken by staff following contact with potentially contaminated blood and body fluids and other articles, as well as precautions to be used when administering first aid and dealing with belligerant individuals. Staff training guidelines call for provision of general information on the disease and specific correctional, security, and medical procedures. Inmate education guidelines call for an emphasis on avoiding high-risk behaviors and precautionary measures to minimize risk of infection. Medical guidelines cover screening at inmate request, medical evaluation and counseling of seropositive inmates, confidentialty concerns, and infection control and decontamination procedures. It is also suggested that decisions regarding housing and work or program participation for inmates with AIDS or ARC should be based on medical circumstances and made on a case-by-case basis. Additional information discusses myths and facts about AIDS.
