'Crimewatch UK' is a British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) television show that encourages public cooperation in the investigation of crime and has proved a successful tool in promoting public cooperation and solving crimes.
Abstract
'Crimewatch' has elicited information that has led to the arrest of 90 people, including 7 who were subsequently charged with murder. In an interview with 'Crimewatch' editor Peter Chafer, the underlying reasons for the program's success and for the growing respect in which it is held by officers in the United Kingdom's county and metropolitan police forces are discussed. The program presents documentary-style reconstruction of serious crimes, using only known facts, look-alike actors, and actual witnesses where possible. It is always followed by an interview with the investigating officer who singles out the crucial areas where the public may be able to provide additional information. The program has proven to be especially helpful in solving crimes where the police investigation has virtually run dry.
