This information packet for Illinois teachers whose classes participate in DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education), a 17-lesson course taught by Illinois police officers on how to resist peer pressure to use drugs, reviews the scope and sequence of the lessons and provides resources for the teachers to conduct extended class activities to reinforce the lessons.
Abstract
The teacher is advised on how to assist the DARE officer, and extended activities are suggested for each of the 17 lessons. A pamphlet outlines the purpose and major areas of the program: accurate information about alcohol and drugs, teaching students decisionmaking skills, showing them how to resist peer pressure, and giving them ideas for alternatives to drug use. An article describes the background, rationale, and strategy of DARE. Newspaper articles report on the implementation of the program in particular schools and school jurisdictions. Also included in the packet are a list of Illinois police agencies that have received DARE training in 1987 as well as a list of States whose police agencies have received training. A sample DARE participation agreement is provided.
