An introductory note provides a summary description of the Dutch criminal justice system in general and the prison system in particular. In one chapter, an Australian expert reports on the conditions of Dutch prisons and remand centers, based on his visits to 15 facilities. Other general studies address prison policy and penological research in the Netherlands, the humaneness and rehabilitative effectiveness of medium-term facilities, the evaluation of a special regime in a remand center, and penal facility management strategies and tactics. Chapters on special topics open with a report on interviews with correctional officers regarding their opinions and attitudes toward changes in the Dutch prison system over the past 10-15 years. Other chapters consider the scheme and effectiveness of prison furloughs, a followup study of patients released from a secure treatment center for mentally ill offenders, an alcohol education program for incarcerated drunk drivers, programs for drug users in remand centers, and problems attending the confinement of ethnic minorities.
