County correctional goals and objectives are appropriate facilities and programs for diverse categories of offenders, secure and human detention facilities, and programs and procedures consistent with public safety and legal standards. Consultants conducted an evaluation of the main jail, profiled inmates, and conducted a classification and tracking study of the inmate population and flow. Consultants also identified options for reducing jail overcrowding and for facility expansion. The advisory committee -- with input from subcommittees on alternatives, the mentally ill, and the public inebriate -- decided to reduce projected demand by implementing new and expanded alternatives to custody. Many of these changes are already in place, enabling the county to choose to build only 50 new beds at this time. The advisory committee decided to seek funds to build a 48-bed, minimum-security work camp around an expandable core. The projected floor space is 14,165 square feet, and the estimated cost is $1,610,461.
