Inmates participating in the program receive approximately 6 months' training, including juvenile counselor role-playing, study of the program's code of ethics, and training in communication skills. The in-house programs present information in five sessions. The first session includes a simulated lock-in, an orientation, introduction of the juvenile to an inmate counselor, and a tour of the prison. The subsequent sessions provide additional information and experiences designed to help turn juveniles away from unlawful acts and criminal lifestyles and think clearly and rationally about their behaviors. An outreach program is available to schools, churches, and community service agencies and organizations. A single-session program also is available. The program has been offered throughout the Baltimore-Washington area and has received a citation from the mayor of Baltimore for its contributions to the civic welfare. Photographs.
