An examination of data for 1982-1987 indicates that reported Index crimes have increased for the past 3 years, and violent crime has increased for the past 4 years in Connecticut.
Abstract
Since 1982, the number of arrests have increased 37 percent, with major increases in drug and driving-under-the-influence arrests. Although the juvenile population has decreased, juvenile violent crime has increased. Serious felony cases have increased 23 percent, while dispositions increased 13 percent during the period studied. For less serious offenses, caseloads increased 41 percent and dispositions 29 percent. In addition to the increases in arrests and court cases added and disposed, there has been a 65-percent increase in total probation caseload and in the seriousness of the offenses handled through probation. While probation staffs have been increased, the supervisory capacity has been strained. Between 1982 and 1987, the daily prison population has increased 39 percent, and projections indicate substantial, steady increases through the early 1990's. Crime among adults and juveniles is more concentrated in the larger towns, placing strains on law enforcement and case processing in some jurisdictions. These increases have implications for the State's criminal justice policies. Figures.
