Steps in planning a public awareness effort are to identify problems and needs and develop goals and objectives. The identification of problems and needs involves determining major crime problems, the public's attitude toward security, and the level of public involvement and participation in community crime prevention programming. The general goal of the public awareness effort is to make all citizens aware of the threat and magnitude of crime and the individual and collective actions which can be taken to prevent it. Vehicles for increasing public awareness of crime prevention are radio, television, newspapers, magazines, service and civic groups/organizations, business and industry, and school.
