As of December 2, 1986, there were 1,918 cases, almost double the number reported for 1985. As part of Florida's AIDS program, surveillance guidelines and procedures have been improved, testing and counseling services were initiated, and extensive outreach efforts were targeted toward high-risk groups. Public education and information efforts have included provision of speakers; dissemination of posters, flyers, and pamphlets; production of an AIDS video; establishment of a hotline; and provision of technical assistance and professional training. Two studies have examined AIDS transmission in Western Palm Beach County, an area with high incidence rates, and among prostitutes in Miami. A survey of high-risk groups should provide information relevant to health education and risk reduction efforts, and a general population survey will be conducted to assess AIDS-related knowledge and attitudes. In addition, comprehensive patient care networks, providing a variety of services, have been established for persons with AIDS and AIDS-related complex. In the future, the Governor's Task Force on AIDS will continue to address a variety of important issues such as contact tracing, pediatric AIDS, AIDS research, and the State role in treatment.
