In previous years, the correctional system was characterized by tension, violence, and overcrowding. A class action lawsuit and a consent degree led to efforts to address problems in staffing, the physical plant, and overcrowding. When Samuel Saxton arrived as the new corrections director for the county about 4 years ago, he was determined to make the Prince George's system the very best possible. Thus, over the past 4 years extensive research, planning, and training have taken place in preparation for the new facility's opening. The new generation jail features a modern design with direct supervision of inmates. These features are designed to reduce violence, tension, and noise levels and to create a more normal atmosphere. New generation jails are also less expensive to construct than conventional facilities. The Prince George's jail has 12 self-contained housing units, each containing 48 rooms bordering a common dayroom area. Staff have received extensive training over the past 15 months. The opening of the new facility and the dedication and professionalism of the staff make for a positive future for corrections in the county.
