In 1987, in an attempt to improve hiring practices, the Oregon Department of Corrections approved a plan for a video correctional officer assessment test that focuses on candidates' interpersonal and people-management skills.
Abstract
The video exam portrays situations in correctional settings and asks candidates to assess performance. The exam consists of 118 questions, most of which are multiple choice. The exam has been carefully researched, scientifically devised, and is less subject to discrimination against minorities. A followup evaluation of the testing procedure is planned that will compare test scores with actual on-the-job performance of newly hired officers. In addition, the department of corrections is taking other steps to improve the quality of the selection procedure. These include use of more complete, lengthy application forms; extension of trial service from 6 months to 1 year; a literacy test; machine-based scoring of video exams; and extensive, rigorous background checks. Similar video exams and training materials have been developed for other professions and have shown their worth by resulting in higher morale, fewer complaints and lawsuits, lower turnover, and improved job performance.
