This six-session, 12-hour runaway suicide prevention training program is designed to help shelter staff understand the depressed and suicidal adolescent.
Abstract
Training sessions provide information on the prevalence and causes of juvenile suicide and profile the suicidal adolescent. Guidelines for assessing suicidal risk are presented, and interview techniques are described. Appropriate interventions for cases involving various levels of suicidal risk are discussed, and issues relating to mental health referral and to hospitalization of the suicidal juvenile are addressed. The training program uses lecture material, participatory exercises (role plays and discussion), audiovisual aids and handouts. Each session provides trainer information on objectives, materials, format, and sequence of presentation. 39 references.
