This article discusses treatment of child sexual abuse offenders, using a case study involving a 12-year-old who was allegedly raped by her stepfather.
Abstract
Typical problems that occur when therapy is provided for perpetrators are listed. These include offender's refusal to assume responsibility for the abuse and to actively participate in a treatment program; pro forma participation in therapy on advise of an attorney when guilt is undeniable; reinforcement of the accused perpetrator's motivation for treatment by reactions of others; and acknowledgement of responsibility in the face of liability to criminal prosecution. 9 footnotes.
