The curriculum for the Washington, D.C., Metropolitan Police Department's Family Crisis Intervention Training Program was formulated to meet the goals of program planning staff, police, and Saint Elizabeth's Hospital.
Abstract
The training modules focus on five behaviors for training, each of which is cumulative and builds on the others. The first behavior focuses on officer safety in intervening in domestic disturbances with modules on defusing hostile individuals, self-defense skills, and approaching conflict. The second behavior, defusion, is covered in modules on family dynamics, stress, and nonverbal communication. Crisis intervention next focuses on modules on communication techniques such as problem identification and the influence of cultural factors and attitudes. The next step, resolution, focuses on third-party conflict management and offers practice on the preceding skills. The final component, referral, is covered in a series of community resources modules that examine such issues as child abuse, drug and alcohol abuse, and mental illness. Information also is provided both on assessment skills and appropriate referrals. Curriculum summaries are provided for the various modules. Photographs and 9 references.
