Twenty-two low-cost security suggestions pertain to physical security, hiring, and operations.
Abstract
Suggestions for physical security are to keep the facility clean, increase lighting, maintain the landscape, provide a gate to the shipping and receiving area, control parking, and control keys. Suggestions for screening prospective employees are to require duplicate applications a few weeks apart to increase the chance of detecting deception, require a sworn affidavit verifying the absence of a criminal record, join a credit bureau, tap into information data bases, and conduct thorough reference checks. Operations suggestions are to troubleshoot security problems, develop links with law enforcement agencies, cultivate the trust of the labor force, decentralize security, and network with security and industry trade groups. Other operations suggestions are to develop cooperative security endeavors with other businesses in the community, conduct an ethics program for employees, use anonymous crime reporting, have an awards program for security tips, and use the company's management training program for security personnel.
