Of the more than 35,500 cases of AIDS reported nationally as of June 1, 1987, 2,173, or 6 percent, were in New Jersey. The Committee's report describes the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) which causes AIDS; how AIDS is transmitted; the risk groups, including homosexual/bisexual males and intravenous drug users; antibody testing; and stages of the illness. The recommended strategy for responding to AIDS include staff training, verification and medical treatment, confidentiality, urine monitoring, education, and antibody testing. Policy for supervision of persons under the jurisdiction of probation departments, especially those verified to be HIV infected, are discussed. The appendixes include Department of Health Statistics; AIDS in prisons and jails; Issues and Options?; a physician referral list; and intensive supervision program urine collection protocol. Also included are guidelines for handling body fluids; a resource list; infection precautions; recommendations for preventing transmission of infection and Department of Health Information Clearinghouses.
