Campus crime not only has a negative impact on an institution's image and morale but also puts an institution at risk of incurring civil damages. Campus security can be improved by the collection and analysis of data on campus crime. Students and employees should be advised of crime risks so they can protect themselves. Security needs must be considered in program design, architecture, and landscaping. Security personnel must be strictly screened, properly equipped, adequately trained and supervised, and readily available. If State and local laws are inadequate for dealing with trespassers and troublemakers, revisions should be sought through the political process. 11 footnotes.
