Clinical evidence and research demonstrate that the perpetrator (P), victim (V), and observer (O) all contribute to child abuse and neglect. The triangle pattern of their relationship rotates with time and circumstance. The perpetrator of sexual assault can become the victim when he is imprisoned. In the next generation, one who is a child-victim can become an adult-perpetrator. Each P, V, and O possesses psychological elements of the other two components of the triangle. By knowing the relative preponderance of these elements in an individual's makeup, a therapist can help to predict possible future abuse. Therapists must be aware of their own orientation toward the perpetrator, victim, and observer. Without diminishing the individual responsibilities of the persons involved, it is possible to point out the collective responsibility of the P, the O and the V. 63 references. 2 figures.
