This videotape defines expectations of employee conduct in a correctional institution, outlines a specific code of conduct, and identifies violations of this code.
Abstract
A discussion of off-duty versus on-duty conduct emphasizes that even the off-duty corrections officer cannot behave in a manner that embarrasses the department. This code prohibits public drunkenness, drug use, failure to pay debts, and any criminal act. The video notes that officers cannot use their position to obtain special privileges and examines several conflict of interest situations. Reasons underlying the paramilitary command structure of correctional facilities are explored, as are policies on contraband. Other areas covered include reporting violations of the code of conduct, repercussions of such violations, confidentiality of staff and inmate records, and the corrections officer's responsibility to cooperate in all investigations. Finally, the video details policies governing use of force, abusive language, favoritism, and involvement with inmates or their families.
