Part I highlights the similarities and differences among the States in key aspects of court organization and management. It covers topics fundamental to understanding the work of State appellate and trial courts and provides answers to questions frequently received by the National Center for State Courts. Charts in Part II show the court structure in each State and the District of Columbia. The charts indicate the courts established in the State, their respective responsibilities, their interrelationships, and the basic procedures by which they operate. The charts also indicate the number and types of judges authorized to serve in a State's court. Part III provides a more detailed description of court organization and management in the form of 34 tables that contain 173 items of information. The first 11 tables describe appellate courts, followed by 2 tables on the role and selection of State court administrators. The remaining 21 tables describe the organization, judges and other staff, subject-matter jurisdiction, and work procedures of State trial courts.
