Of these incidents, 41 percent occurred in 8 percent (79) of the City's schools. To deal with the growing violence in the schools, in addition to the threat posed by increases in students carrying weapons, a meeting was held among district attorneys, police, and school officials. A program was outlined that called for expulsion of any student assaulting a teacher, increased security staffing, installation of two-way talk-back systems in classrooms, use of entry controls and identification cards, and assignment of police to schools in high crime areas. While this program was adopted, funding constraints have impeded its full implementation, and violent assaults against teachers continue to occur not only in the Bronx and Brooklyn, but also in Queens. Many of the victims of the violence have required medical treatment, and some have received special counseling to help them deal with the aftermath of the assaults.
