AN ANALYSIS OF THE YOUTH COURT SYSTEM IN MISSISSIPPI TODAY.
Abstract
INTERVIEWS WITH JUDGES, LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS, ATTORNEYS, REHABILITATION OFFICIALS, AND DELINQUENTS. STATISTICAL COMPILATIONS, LIBRARY RESEARCH, AND ON-SITE INSPECTIONS OF FACILITIES WERE THE BASIS FOR ANALYSIS. YOUTH COURT JURISDICTION AND JUVENILE STATISTICS ARE GIVEN. PHILOSOPHY OF THE YOUTH COURT ACT AND EXPANSION OF THE DUE PROCESS CLAUSE IN JUVENILE COURT IS DISCUSSED. CONCLUSIONS ARE DRAWN AND RECOMMENDATIONS LISTED. ONE CONCLUSION INDICATED THAT THE YOUTH COURT IS NOT A SYSTEM OR SERIES OF RELATED STEPS TOWARD A PRECONCEIVED OBJECTIVE, BUT A MUDDLE OF COMPETING AND OFTEN CONTRADICTORY ACTIVITIES.
