This packet of materials issued to crime victims by the Michigan Sheriffs' Association (MSA) informs victims of their rights, case processing procedures, and services available to them.
Abstract
The Michigan 1985 Crime Victim's Rights Act is included in the packet, along with a brief guide for the layperson on the processing of a criminal case. A pamphlet provides information on the State's victim compensation procedure. A fact sheet is presented on the Michigan Self-Help Clearinghouse, which promotes the involvement of Michigan residents in self-help, mutual support groups. Guidelines are provided for reducing the adverse effects of case continuances and delays on crime victims and witnesses. A memo to Michigan sheriffs from the MSA Victim Assistance Panel of the Sheriffs' Spouses' Caucus outlines the victims' bill of rights and a statement on behalf of crime victims regarding sheriffs' staff education, community awareness, and community liaison. Stages of a crime victim's reactions are described for rape, domestic assault, child sexual assault, and traumatic death. Victim assistance newsletters are included in the packet, along with a list of victim resources.
