Disciplinary and mental health records were reviewed for samples from the 10,534 inmates released from the State prison between July 30, 1982 and September 1, 1983. The inmates were grouped into four categories, based on lengths of incarceration ranging from under 18 months to 49 or more months. An additional detailed review focused on the careers of 239 inmates with extensive disciplinary records, sometimes in combination with mental health problems. The analysis identified four distinct types of problem prison careers. It also found that prisoners' maladaptive behavior tended to decrease over time. Where maladaptation was chronic, patterning and consistency occurred that would permit the definition of problems and the potential for regenerative efforts.
