This report provides statistics on child abuse and neglect in Illinois for fiscal year 1987.
Abstract
In fiscal year 1987, 91,723 children in Illinois were reported as abused or neglected, an increase of 30.2 percent over the previous year. The report includes statistics showing that credible evidence of abuse and/or neglect was found for 42.5 percent of all reported victims, that more than two-thirds of all abused or neglected children were under the age of nine years, and that 75 percent of the victims were abused or neglected by their natural parents. In fiscal year 1987, 54 children in Illinois died from child abuse or neglect, while 6,480 were taken into protective custody. The statistics also show that nearly 60 percent of child abuse and neglect reports were made by individuals who were required to report under the Illinois Abused and Neglected Child Reporting Act. Innovative programs, designed to prevent child abuse and neglect are discussed.
