Papers by law enforcement officers and crime prevention experts cover all areas of crime prevention, including child safety, home security, suicide danger signals, neighborhood watch, reporting crime, and auto theft.
Abstract
The first two chapters focus on personal protection measures for private citizens and law enforcement officers. An overview of child protection addressed basic safety techniques to teach children, latchkey children, stranger danger, kidnapping, abuse, and runaways. A discussion of suicidal behavior and preventive strategies covers actions which can signal suicide attempts, the role of crisis centers, and controls over firearms and drugs. Several papers describe residential security tactics, with attention to home burglary prevention through physical security and community programs such as neighborhood watch and protecting the rural homestead. Instructions are provided for conducting a home security survey and inventorying assets. Topics explored in the final chapters include reporting suspicious activities to law enforcement, auto theft prevention, the Crime Stoppers program, and police-community relations.
