In the Philippines probation is a privilege and not a right. Therefore, the court's decision to grant or deny probation cannot be appealed. Probation can be granted only once and is intended for offenders over the age of 18 who meet certain legal qualifications. Mandatory and special or discretionary conditions of probation are discussed in detail, as are the requirements for post-sentence investigations. The article provides a profile of Filipino probationers that includes the kinds of crimes they commit, their genders, their civil status, their number of dependents, their age levels, their educational attainment, and their employment and income status. Tables include probation caseloads, probation supervision caseloads, disposition of petitions for probation, and government savings attained because of the government's decreased maintenance of probation offenders.
