After reviewing the behavioral indicators of child abuse and the inner world of the abused child, the discussion turns to the relevant literature and the study of a clinical sample. Common therapeutic issues are summarized. A discussion of treatment goals focuses on self-image, empowerment, hope, trauma, trauma resolution, grieving, and affiliation. A description of treatment phases includes the beginning phase, which consists of a comprehensive assessment and the development of a therapeutic alliance; the middle phase, which involves assessment of the client's current functioning and trauma resolution; and the termination phase, which prepares clients to leave therapy and act on their own behalf.
