This study analyzes and evaluates the role of the police in contemporary India.
Abstract
The study points out that India is a changing society, frought with the stresses of large population increases, social unrest, and urbanization. Additionally, India is still struggling with pressures resulting from its change from a colonial country to an independent nation. In a changing society the police must overcome hostility remaining from colonial times and find ways to respond to the needs of the independent community. Indian police must adapt their behavior to the many socio-economic changes that have occurred in their country. The study presents recommendations for changing current police organizational structure, recruitment policies, and training programs. Appendixes list police strength in various Indian States, unions, and territories and proposals for financing police services. 104 references.
