This report presents project background information, work scope, key events, workshop flow and activities, and evaluation results for seven high performance police management workshops.
Abstract
Seven 16-hour management training workshops, sponsored by the Police Management Association and funded by the National Institute of Justice, were held in Arlington, Va.; Merrillville, Ind.; San Antonio, Tex.; Essex County, N.J.; St. Petersburg, Fla.; New Orleans, La.; and Charleston, S.C. Key events and evaluation results are reported for each site. At each workshop, strategies for mid-level police managers focused on drug enforcement for patrol commanders; police response to community problems; and analysis of calls for service, workload, and concomitant programs to address these issues. Management techniques emphasized were problem analysis; planning, implementation, and adaptation of programs; and managing the new programs. The evaluation consisted of a questionnaire survey of workshop participants. Evaluation recommendations pertain to the participant handbook, visual aids, the underlying theme, drug enforcement, and the student evaluations. Appended prospectus, evaluation questionnaire, and participant list.
