Annotation
A child I.D. file is a valuable tool for locating missing children and identifying found children.
Abstract
The file focuses on the child's unique characteristics. It should include background information such as name, nickname, date and place of birth, and address and telephone number; a recent photograph of the child; a physical description (height, weight, hair and eye color, complexion, disabilities, and other distinguishing characteristics); and dental and medical information, such as blood type, allergies, and dental and medical records. Other information may include school related facts, such as school name, address, and telephone number, route to and from school, and expected time of school departure and arrival home. Information on interests, favorite hangouts, and other habits or traits also may be included. Names, addresses and telephone numbers of others who may be able to provide information if a child is missing also should be recorded. Fingerprints also are important for identification purposes. Children often may be fingerprinted through police- or school-based programs. Other child identification tools include information discs, toothprints, videoprints, and I.D. cards or tags. If a child is missing, parents should contact organizations, keep someone by the telephone, distribute posters, and talk with people they know. Prevention efforts should focus on taking precautions and teaching children safety rules. Illustrations.
