Puppe's rule applies when two blunt force injuries with intersecting fractures are visible. It states that the fractures from the first injury develop normally, while those caused by the subsequent injury are stopped where the structure of the skull has already been deployed. Although multiple gunshot wounds of the skull are much more difficult to analyze than wounds from blunt-force wounds, the pattern of radial fracture lines sometimes allows the determination of the sequence of the shots. If a fracture related to an entrance hole passes another entrance hole and is not terminated, the entrance hole causing that fracture must have been inflicted first. Other autopsy findings may also provide evidence on the sequence of gunshot wounds; for example, an entrance-hole-related fracture passing another entrance hold, or interrupted beveling of one entrance hole at a pre-existing fracture. However, although it is difficult to find fractures that can be definitely attributed to one entrance or exit hole, the sequence of shots can sometimes be determined.
