These nine papers present papers from the speakers at a November 1987 symposium focusing on legal, policy, and practical issues related to employee drug testing.
Abstract
Participants represented government, the academic community, and the private sector, individual papers explain the mechanics of drug testing, discuss the accuracy and reliability of drug testing technology, and challenge the results of studies arguing that all drug use seriously affects employee safety or productivity. Additional papers examine the constitutionality of drug testing in the public sector, address drug testing in professional and college sports, and discuss the private employer's rights and risks when testing employees for drug use. Further papers discuss drug testing in the larger context of an employer's right to use modern technology to monitor employees on and off the job and compare drug testing to the theory of social control described by Michel Foucault as the 'disciplinary technology of power.' The final paper examines current, pending, and proposed State legislation related to drug testing. Chapter footnotes, tables, charts, and appended related materials.
