Initially, the Citizens' Commission to Improve Michigan Courts found that a significant public perception exists that the Michigan court system discriminates against individuals on the basis of race, gender, or ethnic origin. In response, the Court then created the Task Force on Racial/Ethnic Issues in the courts to examine the State courts and recommend revision in administration to assure equal treatment. To fulfill its mission, the task force conducted interviews and hearings, examined employment and hiring practices, and conducted various hearings. The task force is in the process of developing university-based research projects with Michigan institutions. Upon completion of these efforts, the task force will produce an objective report and recommendations to eliminate discrimination and public perceptions of inequality. References.
