The National Council for Crime Prevention (NCCP) in Sweden promotes crime prevention measures throughout the country. Some of its efforts have addressed sports spectator violence, child sexual abuse, and crime in urban environments.
Abstract
Studies mounted by the NCCP have focused on crime trends in 1988, economic crime, violent crime, property crime, juvenile delinquency, drugs, and crime victims. The NCCP's Fisksatra Project has investigated the possibility of substantially reducing the crime rate in limited geographical areas through surveys, planning, and evaluation. The NCCP has also published a report on the prevention of building-site thefts and has established a working group to investigate measures for preventing thefts, robberies, and burglaries in retail stores. The 1988 Young Offender's Act, designed to simplify and speed the processing of juvenile cases, is being evaluated by NCCP. A study of sports spectator violence by the NCCP found that such violence has been perpetrated generally by persons with criminal records and those having files with social authorities. A research project and a working group on child sexual abuse are examining its prevalence. Another project is analyzing crime in urban environments and its relation to the urban structure.
