The Forensic Science Service in the Home Office of the government of the United Kingdom now has 160 computers, which are helping the administration of casework and the interpretation of scientific findings.
Abstract
These computers have come from 32 suppliers. The computers provide access to scientific information in databases and other sources. They also handle the input and processing of cases, manage diaries, control instruments, and analyze data. In addition, they are used for word processing, spreadsheets, and the generation of graphs. Problems encountered include difficulties in networking computers, staff fears about the use of computers, and hackers who spend time investigating the computer but not using it for productive work. Nevertheless, the use of computers is likely to increase and broaden. Good communications, the convergence of technologies, and staff training will all be essential parts of this process.
