The reduction in burglaries that began in 1987 continued in 1988. Unfortunately, crimes of violence against the person increased 7.3 percent. Thirty-four percent of the victims were males between ages 17 and 29, and alcohol was often a contributory factor to violence. However, violent crimes represented only 3 to 4 percent of all recorded crime. Specialized efforts to address crime were provided during 1988 by the following squads and units: the Drug Squad, Crime Intelligence, Crown Court Liaison Department, Serious Incident Squad, Child Protection Units, Stolen Vehicle Examination Section, Fraud and Commercial Squad, Special Branch, and the Regional Crime Squad.
