While several State agencies have been involved in projecting prison populations, recent changes in correctional policy have dictated a combined, more systematic approach. To address this need, the State has created a Consensus Review Committee which includes representatives from the Department of Corrections (DOC), the Board of Probation and Parole (BPP), the Commission on Sentencing, the Commission on Crime and Delinquency, and the Office of the Budget. As of December 1988, the State supervised offender population (inmates and parolees) totaled 34,834. That population is estimated to grow 35 percent by the year 2000. This expected growth will place increasing demands on limited and currently overburdened resources of the DOC and BPP. Race, age, sex, and offense breakdowns of prison and parole/probation populations are provided, as is an explanation of the projection methodology used. Graphs and tables.
