Abstract
Accounts of date rape illustrate the tactics used by rapists to manipulate victims against their will. The book comments on myths about date rape, types of rape and rapists, and who is at risk of being victimized. Males as rape victims is also discussed. In considering some of the contributing causes of rape, the book discusses female and male socialization as factors; females are taught to be friendly, nonthreatening, and compliant, while males are taught to be aggressive, competitive and dominant over women. In addressing where to go for help following a rape, the book discusses rape crisis centers, counselors, and police. Other issues covered in association with the rape aftermath are medical care, physical trauma, pregnancy prevention, and the prevention of sexually transmissible diseases. Suggestions for preventing date rape pertain to the development of a more assertive personality, refusing to associate with those who treat you badly, insisting on respect from others, avoiding alcohol abuse, and being straightforward about your feelings and desires. Appended agency resources, glossary, 12-item bibliography, subject index.
