Some categories of products included are keypad access control systems, token and electronic key systems, and proximity systems, both active and passive. Relative costs of providing access control and personal identification with the various kinds of systems are discussed. Using these conventional means of access control and personal identification for the control of access to computer and communications systems is examined, and an outline of the security risks and threats, historical means of solving the problem, and new products beginning to be offered is presented.
