Abstract
A review of problems associated with drug abuse in the workplace includes descriptions of the various drugs that employees might use and notes symptoms of such abuse on the job. An examination of the costs of employee drug abuse presents data on measurable items such as employee leave, health care, and hidden costs. Also highlighted are special employee groups often not considered at risk, including executives and women. In proposing solutions, one chapter presents a conceptual framework for the appropriate use of employee drug testing. Other remedies suggested include employee assistance programs and employee drug education. A model education program consisting of four sections in two modules is summarized. Another chapter focuses on referral sources for employers and suggestions about appropriate treatment. Insurance coverage is discussed as well. A chapter summarizes the author's approach for bringing together the disparate elements discussed in the earlier chapters to achieve "A Program Integration Model." Two addenda contain the President's Executive Order and the Drug Testing Guidelines developed for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Three case studies are provided. 5 charts.
