Crime prevention and physical security measures usually are not given sufficient emphasis by local government officials and developers and usually are undertaken with minimal law enforcement input. It is suggested that a community involve the police as an integral part of the planning process, particularly crime prevention. Police expertise can be utilized to design strategies to deter a wide range of criminal activity and create an environment in which the possibility of apprehension is significantly increased. Key steps in fostering better coordination between the police and the planning board are outlined.
