Abstract
Approximately one-third of the homeless suffer from a major mental illness. Under a policy of deinstitutionalization, most mental disorders are treated through outpatient care in the community. When these services are inadequate or the mentally ill do not access these services, they often become homeless. The range of services needed by the homeless mentally ill include emergency services of food, clothing, and shelter; transitional services that include housing with appropriate supports such as mental health services and supervision; and long-term services that include permanent housing, income assistance or employment, and planning for continued health and mental health treatment. Citizens can help by providing transportation, fundraising, volunteer outreach, contributions, services, support for expanded housing opportunities, and assistance in informing others about the needs of the homeless. A list of local, State, and national resource organizations.
