The Gallup foundation conducted two nationwide surveys in 1989 to determine the attitudes of American adults and teenagers towards the drug crisis and drug policy.
Abstract
Results of the telephone interviews of 1005 adults and 500 teenagers showed that Americans view the drug crisis as the most important problem currently facing the nation. Crack, heroin, and cocaine were considered as the top three of the very dangerous drugs. The survey also showed that there were no drug free zones in America; drug use in the workplace and at school have increased. It was determined that the dangerous years for drugs were between the ages of 16 and 34. Educational programs were considered to be effective, while the public favored interdiction and tougher laws against sellers and users. Future research is planned by the Gallup foundation to establish data banks and to monitor new trends and problems.
