This article details sentencing options developed and implemented by the State of Georgia.
Abstract
Policymakers in Georgia have obtained public support for a variety of sentencing options ranging from minimum control to 24-hour a day control in minimum security facilities. Sentencing options being carried out include basic probation, community service, intensive probation supervision, home confinement, limited confinement in diversion centers, and shock incarceration. These options have not solved Georgia's problem of crowded prisons, and they have not changed public attitudes about the value of punishment. Georgia's experience with each kind of sentencing option is discussed, along with political and policy considerations for obtaining public support for sentencing options.
