Because human beings are the crucial element in the success or failure of security efforts, despite high-technology hardware, security professionals must learn to augment personnel strengths as components of the overall security program and minimize their weaknesses.
Abstract
To accomplish this task, managers must understand the role of education and training in the security arena and expand their knowledge of available tools and techniques. The role of training in security encompasses various techniques used to instill awareness to threats, efforts to motivate people to cooperate with security procedures, and skills needed to implement security policies. Tools and tips for training include information on organizing reference materials on security and examinations of electronic interactive media (EIM), computer-aided instruction (CAI), and audiovisual media. The section on training security employees describes different approaches, curricula, and proposed improvements for the quality of security personnel. Three articles discuss the benefits of academic internship programs in security management. A fifth section covers techniques for training nonsecurity personnel on a company's particular security procedures. Types of training with a narrow focus intended for limited employee groups, such as fire response and safe firearms use, are also discussed. Finally, the book presents six examples of how various organizations tackled their training needs and responsibilities. Chapter references.
