The survey encompassed 18 inspectors general, who conducted 919 investigative cases in February 1988. Descriptions of investigative case results are distinguished by criminal prosecutions, civil actions, administrative actions, and cases closed administratively. A review of comparative case characteristics addresses data regarding other case characteristics and relates these characteristics to case results. The data are presented so as to stimulate discussion of key questions facing investigation managers and provide partial answers to some of these questions. One issue pertains to the frequency of investigations initiated from information provided anonymously and the percentage of successful prosecutions in such cases. Data also identify the legal theories most often underlying cases successfully prosecuted. Also addressed are the most common dispositions of cases based on Federal contracting issues and the percentage of successful prosecutions in cases requiring considerable resources. 33 tables.
