Official statistics from New Jersey show the numbers and causes of fatal traffic accidents in 1988 and trends since 1984.
Abstract
The 1988 statistics showed a death rate of 1.79 for every 100 million vehicle miles traveled. The 966 fatal accidents involved 1,051 fatalities. Sixty-eight percent of the vehicles were passenger cars and 23.6 percent were trucks. Forty-four motorcycles and 2 mopeds were also involved in fatal accidents. Pedalcyclists accounted for 19 fatal accidents. Straight roads were involved in 59 percent of all fatal accidents, and 84 percent of the fatal accidents took place during clear weather conditions. Seventy-one percent of the drivers in the fatal accidents were males. Tables, map, and lists of accidents in each county are included.
