The Louisiana Association of Chiefs of Police recently launched a statewide, multimedia handgun safety campaign to address handgun accidents, particularly those involving children.
Abstract
The child-safety message of the campaign is to unload and lock up handguns in the home to keep them out of children's hands. The campaign also advises parents to check with other parents to ensure that the homes of friends where their children play use safe handgun practices. The campaign includes advice on how to keep handguns out of the hands of suicidal teenagers and burglars. In addition to using television and radio public service announcements, the campaign encourages newspapers to print news stories, opinion pieces, and letters to the editor pertinent to handgun safety. The campaign includes the distribution of handgun safety guidelines developed by the association. The campaign was launched with association press conferences in Baton Rouge, New Orleans, and Shreveport, and cost approximately $30,000. The names and addresses of contact persons are provided.
